Best Furnace Filters 2026

A furnace filter is decided by two numbers: MERV (how small a particle it traps) and yearly cost (price per filter times changes per year). We show both. Not sure what MERV you need? Start with the MERV guide.

Common questions

Which furnace filter is actually best?

It depends on what you’re filtering and what your system can move. For allergies, pets or smoke, a MERV 13 catches the fine particles. For most homes, MERV 11 is the everyday sweet spot. For an older system or maximum airflow, MERV 8. We show the yearly cost of each so you can compare the real expense, not just the sticker price.

What’s the real cost of a furnace filter?

The number that matters is yearly cost — price per filter times how many you go through a year. A cheap filter you change every month can cost more than a pricier one that lasts three. We compute the annual cost for each product below.

Do the expensive filters clean the air better?

Only up to the point your system can handle. A higher MERV traps smaller particles but restricts airflow; past MERV 13 on a thin 1-inch slot you can starve the blower. Beyond that, a pricier filter of the same MERV isn’t cleaner — check the MERV and the yearly cost, not the brand.

How do I know my filter size?

Read the size on your current filter (like 20x25x1). Buy the same nominal size. Our MERV guide has a size chart with the true dimensions.

Prices and specs captured from retailer listings (2026-07-12); yearly cost is computed by us (price × changes per year). There is no central government filter directory, so ratings come from manufacturer/retailer specs. Amazon links carry our tag on human pages only. See our methodology.
